Kian's ArtQuest @ Road To Sahara Exhibition by Suzlee Ibrahim

"Sahara Series are works inspired
by my journey to the Sahara Desert,
in September 2010. During this trip,
I made small sketches on paper
based on my observation and mood.
The process was transferred onto a few
different sizes of canvas.
From the cooling eyes of the green grass
and trees of the fertile oasis to the heat
and hot desert; it inspired me to paint
expressively on my canvas.

On the canvas, I let my hands moved
spontaneously with my gestures and
splash of colours. I worked on layers
of colours; most of the time using acrylic
and bitumen. In the process, the layers
of colours built up, thin and thick lines
from oil bar showed from beneath and
top of the colours. The butimen would then
flow and moved with thinner, melted and
some colours became transparent caused
by the erosion. The cloudiness of bitumen
gave somewhat a vague effect to the colours
underneath. At some areas, I ran over bitumen
strokes to obstruct the original gestured.

My works make rhythm. My gestural movement,
directly or indirectly added to the use of bitumen
on top of acrylic and oil bar; all created texture
and mood in my paintings. My artwork takes
the audience into depth and space; a journey
created on a piece of canvas"
